Self-esteem refers to the way we view ourselves, thoughts we have about ourselves and the value we place on ourselves as people.
Self-esteem is therefore your central beliefs about yourself and the core ideas about the kind of person you are – these are based on the experiences you have had in your life and the “messages” you have received from others about the kind of person you are.
If your past experiences have been positive your beliefs about yourself are likely to be positive. If like most people your experiences have been mixed then you may have a range of different ideas about yourself. However, if your experiences have been negative then your beliefs about yourself are likely to be negative – resulting in low self-esteem and this may have impacted on many aspects of your life
